The Chicago Sky’s season had its bright moments early but ended disappointedly.
After returning from the Olympic break, the Sky started a downward spiral, especially once rookie phenom Angel Reese went down with a season-ending wrist injury. Ultimately, the Sky finished 13-27 and failed to reach the WNBA playoffs, even though over half of the teams in the league reach the postseason.
It looks like a big part of the Sky’s problems were due to unhappy players in the locker room.
According to the Chicago Tribune’s Julia Poe, the Sky guard was upfront in her exit interview about some of the things that bothered her during the season.
“In this league, I feel like you’ve got to have someone that’s going to give you some grace. This league is so good, I say it all the time. You’re not going to be perfect. But you also need someone that’s going to trust you to run the team and that’s going to trust you and give you grace because that’s what it’s all about.
“It’s a 40-minute game. You’re not going to be perfect, but having someone that’s going to trust you, I feel like that just makes you more confident, not feeling like you have to look over your shoulder and hesitate yourself and doubt yourself ever.
“I feel like that’s important. Winning is always important. This is my first time not making a playoff so that’s tough. And yeah, pretty much just being able to get back to being Dana. We’ll just see what that looks like.”
It seems like the coaching staff didn’t put their trust in much of the team, which was part of why the Sky unraveled towards the end.
It’ll be interesting to see what Angel Reese or the coaching staff has to say in response.
