The Washington Post is reporting that University of Connecticut head coach Randy Edsall will be announced Monday as the new head coach of the Maryland Terrapins. Edsall was reportedly in College Park on Sunday for a tour of the campus and an interview with the search committee following his teams loss to Oklahoma 48-20 in the Fiesta Bowl on New Years day.
Numerous reports had indicated former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach was the front runner for the Maryland job but apparently Leach made some within the Maryland athletic department nervous. An unnamed source explained the change:
They wanted to make the conservative, safe, non-confrontational hire. That’s the bottom line.
While Leach would have brought a great reputation for offensive wizardry Edsall has built a strong program out of a former I-AA team in Connecticut and, with his ties to the region, is clearly the safer choice.
