The Pittsburgh Steelers were unable to put an end to their losing streak on Christmas Day, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that really wasn’t all that competitive. And on Thursday, Steelers legend Cameron Heyward didn’t mince words about how poor the game was from his team.
Neither side of the ball was all that great for the Steelers, allowing 29 points defensively while putting up just ten on offense. Now, their losing streak moves to three games, albeit against very good competition.
This doesn’t exactly look like a great sign for Steelers fans as they look towards the postseason. Losses to the Ravens and Chiefs in particular aren’t great considering they may very well end up facing off against either of these teams in a potential playoff matchup.
Heyward, who has earned six Pro Bowl honors over the course of his 14 NFL seasons, spoke with reporters after the loss, detailing how he believes the Steelers have been “squandering opportunities”.
“The last three weeks we played like s***,” Heyward told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “Simple as that. I own that. Every player’s got [to own that]. Can’t squander opportunities, whether it’s turnovers, whether it’s getting off the field, whether it’s scoring touchdowns, it’s a multitude of things, and it has reared its big head.
“My confidence is never going to lack in the group. It’s just from an execution standpoint, it’s just dumbfounding. We have to get it done on those plays. We sit up in meetings, we take it out to the field. That means nothing if you don’t do it in the game.”
Losing three games before going into the postseason obviously isn’t where the Steelers want to be. That being said, it’s important that they get back on track in Week 18 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals may very well be playing for a chance at the postseason as well if everything falls their way in Week 17 in the AFC. So it’s certainly not the ideal get-right game at the end of the season for the Steelers.
