The Detroit Lions appear destined to make a deep run in the postseason this year as the current No. 1 seed in the NFC. And as a result, they were seemingly able to entice a respected veteran quarterback out of retirement for one last shot at a Super Bowl championship.
Former Pro Bowl quarterback Teddy Bridgewater played nine seasons in the NFL before calling it a career after last season.
Since then, Bridgewater has been a high school football coach, where he was actually able to lead his alma mater to a state championship.
However, his time as a coach will seemingly be put on the back burner for the time being to chase a Super Bowl championship one last time.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Bridgewater informed viewers on NFL Network that he would be coming out of retirement and is expected to sign with the Lions for the remainder of the season.
The move obviously makes sense for Bridgewater since he is quite familiar with the Lions system. His last season in the NFL came with the Lions as Jared Goff’s backup last year.
For the Lions, the move seems to be a great insurance policy if Goff happens to get hurt between now and the start of the postseason.
Bridgewater has shown to be a very capable quarterback when called upon throughout his NFL career. Even if he never quite had an exceptional NFL career.
It remains to be seen where Bridgewater will fit in the Lions depth chart. The organization does also have second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker as an option behind Goff.
But another capable quarterback with a ton of experience behind Goff never hurts. So it will be interesting to see if Bridgewater ever gets to prove himself on the playoff stage.
