Thursday night’s game between the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers featured two of the league’s best edge rushers with Myles Garrett’s Browns taking on T.J. Watt’s Steelers.
It was Garrett and the Browns who came up on top, and he had a message for Watt after the game.
During the game, Myles Garrett was the most dominant player on the field, recording three sacks to T.J. Watt’s zero to help lead the Browns to a 24-19 victory.
In his postgame interview, Garrett made it pretty clear that he thinks he proved that he is the top edge rusher in the league as he called out Watt a little bit.
“I got a lot of respect for him, a lot of respect for all the guys over there,” Garrett said after the game according to Pro Football Talk. “But I’m number one. And that’s what I am, Edge 1, to defensive player of the year. I’m the guy. It’s still me.”
Garrett pointed out that in addition to his better production, he also faces a more challenging situation than anyone else whenever he goes against opposing offenses.
“There’s no other person being defended like I am, or schemed or played against like I am,” Garrett said.
Obviously, Garrett is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. On Thursday night, he certainly made the case that he should be a contender for the award this year, as well.
This is the first of two matchups between the two teams and star players this season.
Garrett obviously out-performed Watt in the first matchup, we’ll have to see whether or not Watt can bounce back in the second matchup.
