The college football community is grieving this week following the tragic death of a freshman quarterback in a tragic accident.
This week, Jennifer Somers of KSDK reported that 18-year-old Antoni Wrobel lost his life in a wrong-way collision with a semi-truck.
“According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 18-year-old was driving southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. Route 61 at about 11:25 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a semitruck,” Somers wrote for KSDK.
“The semi went through the median and stopped in the northbound lane. The Wentzville teen’s car came to a rest in the median, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to MSHP. The Lewis County coroner identified the victim as 18-year-old Antoni Wrobel.”
Wrobel, who went by Tony, was a freshman quarterback for the Culver-Stockton Wildcats football team in Missouri.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Freshman QB Tony Wrobel. He was a unique and outgoing spirit who had a passionate love for his teammates, football, and life itself,” the Culver-Stockton football team wrote in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Please keep his family, teammates, and our community in your thoughts and prayers at this time.”
The tragic news made waves on social media as the college football community expressed their condolences.
“I can’t put into words the pain in my heart. He was one of the brightest young football minds I’ve seen. Tony’s relentless work ethic and love for football will not be forgotten. He made me a better coach and person. He is missed already! Please send your prayers,” Culver-Stockton quarterbacks coach Anthony Zampese wrote in a post on X.
“You’ll forever be in my prayers, rest in peace,” teammate Thomas Shue wrote.
“One of a kind. Will be missed,” Culver-Stockton wide receivers coach Patrick Sharpe wrote.
“Devastating. Fly High Young Man!” teammate Hunter Feidon wrote.
“Unbelievable human. Unselfish, GREAT teammate, loved football, infectious personality, and just a great person to be around,” Culver-Stockton offensive coordinator RJ Melton wrote.
“Kid always had a smile on his face. He was always ready to go and never complained. My brother for life,” fellow Culver-Stockton quarterback Adam Tosclair wrote.
“Never a dull moment with you brotha, forever will be in our hearts,” teammate Nick Luster wrote.
It’s clear that Wrobel will be missed and not forgotten.
