After Georgia’s loss to Ole Miss on Saturday, a Georgia player was spotted dancing and celebrating on the field with Ole Miss fans, much to the displeasure of head coach Kirby Smart.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Georgia defensive back Jake Pope was seen celebrating with some Ole Miss fans on the field after the game.
During his Monday press conference, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart addressed the incident. Smart provided additional context, explaining that the fan was a childhood friend of Pope. He also noted that Pope felt quite embarrassed by the situation.
Still, Smart was quick to criticize his player.
“What an idiot. Just stupid,” Smart said according to On3.
“I didn’t see it until today,” Smart said. “He’s embarrassed about it. That’s a childhood friend of his. Just not real smart. But to be honest with you, I don’t really have time to waste on that. My focus is on Tennessee.”
Needless to say, Smart’s blunt criticism of his player led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“UGA has a culture problem,” one fan said in a post on X.
“I will pray for that kid in practice this week,” another fan added.
“Kirby more upset about this than all the wreckless and drunk driving charges,” another fan wrote.
“Lots of culture issues in Athens,” another fan added.
“Being called an idiot by your coach is crazy,” another fan said.
Clearly, Smart is ready to move on from the incident.
