Trans athletes competing in sports has been a hot-button issue recently, and it has made its way into college sports.
According to Dan Zaksheske of Outkick, The University of Wyoming is the third school refusing to compete against San Jose State in volleyball due to the presence of trans athlete Blaire Fleming. The shocking decision makes the Univerisity of Wyoming the third school to refuse competition against Fleming.
The university released an official statement on Tuesday.
“After a lengthy discussion, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San Jose State University in the UniQyo Sports Complex on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Wyoming. The Cowgirls will host Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 PM in the UniWyo Sports Complex.”
It’s a shocking and strange move considering there’s no harm in trying to win. Instead, it seems that the University of Wyoming is afraid of getting embarrassed by a better team.
The decision is even more odd because there has been nothing to prove that trans athletes have any real competitive advantage in sports.
It’ll be interesting to see how many schools decide to avoid competition throughout the volleyball season.
