With a little over a week until they begin the regular season with a showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals, the New England Patriots have officially named their starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
According to a report from league insider Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has informed the team that Jacoby Brissett will be the team’s starting quarterback this year over rookie first-round pick Drake Maye.
Now official: Patriots coach Jerod Mayo informed players in a team meeting that Jacoby Brissett is the starting QB, while Drake Maye will be his backup. Brissett told [NFL Network] in August, ‘I’m the perfect person to mentor the guys, but I’m also the perfect person to start,'” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

The Patriots signed Brissett this offseason to bring a little bit of veteran leadership into the room and then drafted Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft. The team allowed him to compete for the starting role with Brissett, but it appears that Brissett beat him out.
Maye might be the future for the Patriots, but the present is Brissett.
