The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired Mac Jones from the New England Patriots earlier this offseason, and it sounds like he has made the team and will serve as the backup quarterback to starter Trevor Lawrence throughout this season.
As Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk points out, the Jaguars decided to cut C.J. Beathard, who was competing with Mac Jones for the backup quarterback role this season. This means, obviously, that Jones has won the backup job behind Lawrence.
“The Jaguars have announced all of the moves they made to get down to 53 players and they include one that settled the question of their backup quarterback,” Alper wrote for Pro Football Talk on Tuesday.
“Mac Jones and C.J. Beathard were battling for the job this summer and Jones is the only one who has made it through cutdown day. Beathard has been released with an injury settlement — he’s been dealing with a groin injury — on Tuesday.”
Things obviously did not go according to plan for Jones during his time with the New England Patriots as he was benched at the end of last season. But he will have a chance for a fresh start down in Jacksonville.
