A decision is coming on Gregg Berhalter’s future with the United States Men’s National Team.
According to Fox Sports’ Doug McIntyre, the U.S. Soccer Federation will make a determination on Berhalter’s future by the middle of next week. The uncertainty surrounding the head coach’s future with the program comes after an embarrassing showing in the Copa América tournament, in which the U.S. was eliminated in the group stage in which it scored a victory over Bolivia before suffering losses to Panama and Uruguay.
“Our tournament performance fell short of our expectations. We must do better,” U.S. Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker said in a statement following the USMNT’s 1-0 loss to Uruguay, which eliminated it from the tournament. “We will be conducting a comprehensive review of our performance in Copa América and how best to improve the team and results as we look towards the 2026 World Cup.”
The USMNT first hired Berhalter after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. While the U.S. Soccer Federation ultimately opted to bring him back after he led the USMNT to an appearance in the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup, he has remained a polarizing figure among U.S. Soccer fans, with the disappointing showing in the Copa América potentially sealing his fate as the program’s head coach.
