The National Football League punished the Detroit Lions this week over an infraction the team committed. After what the league deemed “impermissible contact,” the Lions forfeited an OTA session of theirs, the team’s final one.
The Associated Press reported on the Lions’ decision to forfeit their final OTA session of the year.
“The Detroit Lions have lost one day of organized offseason workouts after breaking rules relating to on-field contact during a practice the week of May 27,” the AP wrote via ESPN.
“Detroit had organized team activities planned Monday, the final session before training camp next month, but it has been forfeited,” the article continued.
The Lions aren’t the first and won’t be the last team to be penalized for training camp violations. In 2022, the NFL fined Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy and took an OTA session away from the team for 2023.
Detroit appeared to be cooperative with the league after committing the infraction. Obviously, that doesn’t right the wrong, but the team isn’t challenging the decision to see their final OTA session be forfeited.
The Lions are on the heels of one of the franchise’s most successful seasons ever. After winning the NFC North for the first time, the Lions made the NFC Championship Game. They ultimately fell to the San Francisco 49ers, but the team’s run and promise have the city hopeful for 2024 and beyond.
