The Washington Commanders have only played two NFL seasons under their current name after ditching their old derogatory name in 2020 and embracing the “Commanders” name in 2022. But it sounds like fans are already ready to move on to a different name instead.
A recent poll suggested that the vast majority of Washington Commanders fans either dislike the name or hate the name, and a very small percentage of fans think that the team should keep the name for the future.
“According to an April Washington Post-Schar School poll, most local sports fans (54 percent) say they either dislike or hate the name. Among just local Commanders fans, the antipathy toward the name is even more stark — 58 percent say they don’t like it,” the Washington Post reported this week.
“In fact, only 16 percent of Commanders fans think the team should keep the name, while most say they would like the team to change to a different name. Again.”
Obviously, this is pretty significant news and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.

Not gonna lie… the Washington Football team was kinda cool. But I understand, you need a mascot and a brand.

The team’s new ownership has not ruled out a name change in the future, but they have indicated that it is not a priority for the team.
