Olympic gold medalist Gabe Steveson is undeniably one of the most impressive and accomplished athletes on the planet, winning an Olympic gold medal in wrestling in Tokyo. But in a shocking twist, it sounds like he’s going to try his talents at a completely different sport, signing with the Buffalo Bills to give football a try.
The Buffalo Bills announced on Friday that they were signing Gabe Steveson to give him a try at a new sport. Steveson will be working out with the team’s defensive linemen, and he admitted that it was actually the first time that he had ever even worn a pair of cleats.
“I have been fortunate to compete at the highest level of competition in my sport but am looking forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills may translate to football,” Steveson said according to ESPN. “I am grateful to Coach [Sean] McDermott, [General Manager] Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me this opportunity.”
Obviously, Steveson has a lot of work to do if he is going to carve out an actual NFL career, but he is clearly an elite athlete with a lot of raw strength. We’ll have to see if the Bills can turn him into a football player.
