This week, the Detroit Lions officially announced a pretty massive contract extension for starting quarterback Jared Goff with guarantees in the contract that total more than $148 million, but it doesn’t sound like Goff was motivated all that much by the money when it came to the contract negotiations. Instead, he just wanted security.
During his press conference after the contract extension was announced, Jared Goff made it clear that his primary motivation was getting a no-trade clause that ensures he will either remain in Detroit or he will have control over where he goes next.
“It was mostly security,” Goff said according to Pro Football Talk. “You can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn’t really the thing that was ever something extremely concerned with. The security, the no-trade clause and all that stuff — knowing that was in there. Feeling secure and knowing that I can now put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”
Obviously, Goff came to Detroit by way of a trade with the Los Angeles Rams. And while it worked out for him that time, it doesn’t sound like he’s interested in being traded again against his wishes.
