This week, transgender high school runner Aayden Gallagher dominated at the Portland Interscholastic League Championship semifinals, finishing first in one event and second in another. And one Team USA superstar was not happy about it.
Carilyn Johnson is a three-time medalist with the United States 24-hour national team. And after seeing a video of Gallagher competing this week, she expressed her outrage on social media.
“Aaaaaand here we go again. And DO NOT come on here and say the girls should just refuse to compete. The ADULTS are the problem, and we all know it. Stop telling kids that one boy’s ‘feelings’ matter more than every other girl they compete against,” Johnson said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Gallagher was permitted to compete against other girls by a policy from the Oregon School Activities Association.
“The OSAA endeavors to allow students to participate for the athletic or activity program of their consistently asserted gender identity while providing a fair and safe environment for all students,” the policy stated.
“As with Rule 8.2 regarding Duration of Eligibility / Graduation, rules such as this one promote harmony and fair competition among member schools by maintaining equality of eligibility and increase the number of students who will have an opportunity to participate in interscholastic activities.”
Gallagher earned a spot in the final for both events.
