Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has left the door open for a potential return to the NFL, making it clear that he is staying in shape if any team wants to call him if they find themselves in need at the quarterback position. But it doesn’t sound like the New England Patriots are expecting him to be back with them this season.
During a recent press conference, New England Patriots first-year head coach Jerod Mayo was asked whether or not the team would welcome Tom Brady if he did opt to come out of retirement once again. Mayo certainly didn’t decline, but he did make it clear he doesn’t expect that to happen.
“I love Tom, and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach,” Mayo said Monday morning on WEEI. “But as far as going on the field, I don’t know. But if he comes in here, once again, going back to the ‘hey, the best player will play,’ you’ve gotta come in here in compete, and he loves competition. I doubt he’s gonna be walking through these doors any time soon.”
Brady is set to begin his career as a broadcaster and is working on becoming a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, so it seems like his playing days are likely over. But he hasn’t shut the door on that just yet.
