Damar Hamlin returned to the active lineup for the Buffalo Bills last year after collapsing on the field and needing life-saving CPR, but he was not given the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award despite quite literally coming back from death. And while he supported Joe Flacco, who won the award, it sounds like he thinks he deserved it.
During a recent appearance on Maggie and Perloff admitted the brutal truth that he wanted the award himself and that he felt like he deserved it. But he also celebrated Joe Flacco winning the award, saying that his journey back to the league “wasn’t something that a trophy can define.”
“I heard about that,” Hamlin said. “I heard some people were in an uproar. I did at first, I’m not gonna lie. I did, a little bit, just because you know I’m a competitor myself. Any competition you put me in, I want to win. I clapped for Joe as he went on stage and clapped for him as he went off. . . . It wasn’t something that a trophy can define.”
Flacco won the award over Hamlin after leading the Cleveland Browns to the postseason with a string of prolific passing performances. While Hamlin did return from his terrifying ordeal, he did not have nearly the on-field impact as Flacco.
