This week, there was some controversy at a women’s soccer tournament in Australia after five transgender women participated in the tournament and ultimately helped lead their team to victory. But it wasn’t just a trophy that the team claimed – they also earned a pretty significant cash prize.
According to a report from The Daily Mail Australia, a team that featured five transgender players recently won the pre-season Beryl Ackroyd Cup tournament, which is a women’s soccer tournament in Sydney, Australia. And as a result of their tournament victory, they also won a pretty substantial cash prize.
“Flying Bats FC won every game they played over the course of the four-week competition, winning the grand final 4-0 at Macquarie Park on Sunday to take home the $1000 jackpot,” The Daily Mail Australia wrote.
“There were huge winning margins in some games, with one trans player scoring six goals in a 10-0 victory.”
According to the report, there were a lot of complaints from parents and various organizations as a result of the decision to allow the five transgender women to compete in the tournament.
The issue of whether or not transgender women should be permitted to compete in women’s sports has become a hot-button issue recently, and this is certainly going to add some fuel to that debate.
