Michigan Wolverines defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was recently arrested in Ann Arbor for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. And on Thursday, Scruggs made a definitive decision about his future with the program.
Scruggs took two tests at the police station and registered blood-alcohol levels of .16 and .17, double the legal limit in Michigan. He was then suspended by the program following the arrest.
Scruggs hasn’t been in Michigan all that long. In fact, the team had just hired him earlier this month to serve as their defensive line coach after previously coaching at Wisconsin.
Well, it turns out his time in Michigan will last less than a month thanks to his OWI charge. On Thursday, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore confirmed that Scruggs had resigned from his new position within the program, first reported by Zach Shaw of 247 Sports.

It’s obviously understandable for both the program and Scruggs to want to have a clean break after this situation. But this could be a pretty significant loss given Scruggs reputation.
Naturally, fans had plenty to say about the situation on social media.

Michigan already has to break in an entirely new defensive coaching staff under Sherrone Moore. Now they’ll have to find a new DL Coach with spring practice already kicked off across the country
With NCAA sanctions still looming, spring is not looking too kind for @UMichFootball https://t.co/hmonolUhfV

Now, not only will Michigan need to withstand the departure of Jim Harbaugh this offseason back to the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers, but they will also need to deal with Scruggs departure and filling this new vacancy.
Could this impact Michigan’s upcoming 2024-25 season? Only time will tell, but at the very least this should be a bit concerning for Wolverine fans.
