The Washington Commanders currently hold the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft and are widely expected to select a quarterback with the pick, but it sounds like they’re also bringing in a veteran player to compete for the starting role and help provide some depth.
According to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Washington Commanders have reached a deal to sign veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota.
“Former Eagles QB Marcus Mariota is signing with the Washington Commanders on a 1-year deal with a base value of $6 million and upside to $10 million, per source,” Schefter said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Mariota spent last season with the Eagles where he served as the backup quarterback to starter Jalen Hurts. The season before that, he was the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons before getting benched for Desmond Ridder late in the season.
It’s not clear what exactly this means for previous starting quarterback Sam Howell as he enters his third season with the team. Signing Mariota and drafting a rookie quarterback would lead the team with three quarterbacks on the roster, all of whom likely have aspirations of starting.
