The Chicago Bears currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and they could use it to select a rookie quarterback. But if they instead decide to stick with Justin Fields as their starter and trade the pick, it sounds like the Washington Commanders could be interested in trading for that top pick.
During a press conference ahead of the 2024 NFL Combine on Tuesday, Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters did not rule out the possibility of trading for the No. 1 overall pick if the Bears did decide to trade the pick.
“Really with anything that could happen in this league, you always want to be involved in it,” Peters said according to Pro Football Talk. “Whether you actually pull the trigger or not, that’s a different story. But you always want to understand what people are looking to do, what they’re doing whether it’s trading down to 28 — I don’t know who 28 is, so don’t like think I’ve got some master plan — or trading anywhere whether it’s a player or not. So, you always want to be involved in any of those things, whether you actually pull the trigger at the end. That’s when you gather all the information and make the best decision for the team.”
The Commanders currently hold the No. 2 pick in the draft – right behind the Bears – but could look to trade up to make sure they get their first choice, especially given offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s relationship with potential top pick Caleb Williams, who he coached at USC this past season.
We’ll certainly have to see what happens.
