Earlier this year, the state of North Carolina moved forward with a law banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports leagues in middle school, high school, and at the collegiate level. And now, the NFL’s first transgender cheerleader is making her voice heard against the legislation.
Last month, North Carolina’s state legislature overrode a veto from Gov. Roy Cooper to push through The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. Justine Lindsay became the first transgender cheerleader in the history of the NFL when she joined the Carolina Panthers’ TopCats cheer squad last year, and she’s speaking out against the law.
In a recent interview with Elle, Lindsay promised to fight against the law until she can’t anymore.
“I will fight this until I can’t fight anymore,” Lindsay told Elle. “It saddens me to see it.”
The law doesn’t directly affect Lindsay as it does not apply to private leagues or teams like the NFL cheerleaders, but Lindsay knows that the whole battle is about more than just her.
“Everything that I’m going through now, it’s bigger than me,” Lindsay said. “No one is going to stop the show.”
It’s clear that Lindsay wants to inspire and make an impact on the next generation, beginning with fighting against this legislation.
