Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan had one of the best friendships in the NBA, so when Toronto dealt their star shooting guard to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kahwi Leonard, the team’s star point guard wasn’t pleased.
TSN’s Josh Lewenberg reports Lowry dodged calls all summer from president Masai Ujiri and new head coach Nick Nurse.
“Of greater concern, per league sources, Lowry had also been dodging calls and texts from team officials, including president Masai Ujiri and new head coach Nick Nurse, who Lowry said he only spoke with briefly right after Nurse was promoted in June.”
Admittedly, it’s not a great look for a star player to completely ghost team officials, however, Lowry was hurt from his best friend (and arguably the team’s best player) getting traded after the team won 59 games the previous season.
Sometimes, it takes time to get over drama. Lowry obviously wasn’t thrilled about DeRozan getting shipped out to the Spurs, and needed time to himself away from the team to sort things out.
Per Lewenberg, things appear peachy as Lowry joined team festivities this week. In this case, time will heal all wounds. Plus, once Lowry’s see Leonard in action, I’m sure all will be forgiven.
