Apple has just released a security update (Mac Security Update 2011-003) in response to the MacDefender malware that will now self-update new malware definitions to fight against future outbreaks of harmful software infections. The security update is a small download (2.1MB) that adds not only a definition for the MacDefender malware, but allows the xprotect.plist file (the file that OS X uses to identify files that may contain malware) to update itself with the latest virus/malware definitions.
If you feel uncomfortable giving Apple the freedom to update this software on its own, you can prevent it from doing so by going to Security Preferences in System Preferences and unchecking “Automatically update safe downloads list.”
