The White Sox managed to close out the third inning of Friday’s game against the Cubs with one of the most haphazard double-plays that one is likely to see in professional baseball.
With Kyle Hendricks on second and Addison Russell on first, Dexter Fowler lined a ball into right field. Avisail Garcia made a great diving catch, only to fumble the transfer to his throwing hand. This caused confusion on multiple fronts as Garcia hurled the ball towards the infield, only to see it roll into foul territory. During that time, Hendricks had scooted over to third base, thinking that Fowler had made a hit and he couldn’t get back to second before he was thrown out at second.
It’s hard to say what is more poorly reflected here; the White Sox’s defense or the Cubs’ base running. Let’s just say that no one ends up looking great in this little clip.
