Kansas entered their 2010 NCAA Tournament Second Round matchup with Northern Iowa as a legitimate title contender, one that boasted a 33-2 record and was ranked No. 1 in the AP polls for almost the entire season. One of the best KU teams in program history featured the likes of Cole Aldrich, Sherron Collins, Thomas Robinson, Xavier Henry and the Morris twins. They were big, fast, savvy, well-coached and extremely talented, all of which led many to believe they would have zero issue disposing of No. 9 seed UNI.
Their title hopes were ended by the feisty Panthers and one name became forever engrained in the minds of Kansas fans: Ali Farokhmanesh. The UNI guard had the ball with 40 seconds left and his team up 63-62. He proceeded to nail a deep three-pointer that proved to be the difference-maker in propelling the Panthers into the Sweet 16. Farokhmanesh is now a graduate assistant at Nebraska, a short jaunt from Omaha, where Kansas is playing their opening round games at this year’s tourney. It would only make sense for him to toy with their fans a little bit by bringing back the haunting memories.
This is not the first time this stunt has been pulled and while it’s far from original, it always produces hilarious results.
