You’ve heard it a million times and you’ll hear it another billion times before, and likely after, Selection Sunday: RPI, RPI, RPI, RPI. The Ratings Percentage Index is repeatedly used in arguing for or against the inclusion of a bubble team and in heated debates over appropriate seeding for other teams. Although most fans still don’t have a clue what RPI actually means, you should know that the NCAA Tournament committee heavily considers a team’s RPI along with victories versus the RPI Top 25, Top 50 and so on.
While an RPI can destroy a mid-major, it can also greatly benefit a perennial contender, or vice versa. As we head toward the only time of the college basketball season that most casual fans care about, let’s look at which times have the most attractive RPI before tourney time. The Week 18 Re-Rankings rank the current AP Top 25 teams from worst RPI to best.
