Sergio Salcido Luna was on his way to the job just prior to 3 am on Monday morning when a gunman at the San Ysidro border crossing near Tijuana, Mexico, opened fire, killing him along with passenger Kevin Joel Romero.
According to area news reports,
Luna and Romero were riding in a late model Mazda B2500 pickup truck and waiting to cross the border into the U.S. when they were gunned down by an unknown assailant who shot them with a 9mm caliber gun.
Baja California attorney general Rommel Moreno Manjarrez told reporters that:
detectives were investigating the possibility that the incident could be drug related, saying one of the victims had “a small packet” of drugs among his belongings.
U.S. law enforcement, though, told the San Diego paper that neither man had a criminal record. Luna was 4-5 as a welterweight in his pro career. Our prayers go out to both victims and their families.
