The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took over much of the media for many weeks in 2014 and although one individual participated in the fundraising activity, he never realized that it would quickly hit home. Larry Stogner, a 39-year veteran news anchor and reporter for WTVD in Durham, North Carolina revealed on-air that he has ALS and would be retiring immediately.
Stogner taped a brief 2-minute message to WTVD viewers, thanking them for concerns over his impaired voice and appreciating every opportunity he’s been given over a 4-decade career in broadcast journalism. He revealed in the video and subsequent live message that he’ll be taking some extended vacation with his wife before returning to the station for a chat with colleagues.
