As the Raiders to San Antonio rumors continue to swirl and pick up legitimate steam, the city’s lone franchise does not appear thrilled with the idea.
In a state loaded with professional sports teams, the Spurs remain the only franchise in the nation’s 7th-largest city of San Antonio, leading many to believe there is plenty of attention to go around. However, that does not appear to be the case, if you ask the Spurs organization.
According to Tom Orsborn and Josh Baugh of the San Antonio Express-News, the current ownership group would oppose a potential move to San Antonio for the Raiders, citing limited revenue streams for ticket sales, sponsorship, commercial partnership and other items.
Orsborn and Baugh also mentioned the Spurs would not be opposed to an NFL team if the teams shared ownership group, giving them full power over revenue streams throughout the metro area. Furthermore, it is likely that both the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys would also oppose a third franchise in the state, especially the very territorial Jerry Jones.
While there are hundreds of hoops to jump through and numerous other procedural items that must run perfectly before the Raiders were to actually relocate, this potential tension is worth keeping an eye on.
