San Diego Padres reliever Alex Torres became the first player in MLB to don the new protective cap designed to help prevent traumatic head injuries. Torres knows just how dangerous his job can be, as he watched former Rays teammate Alex Cobb take a screaming liner off the head in Tampa last season.
“It could save our lives, if someone hits a ball to your head,” Torres said.
The new caps are optional for players and I’m obviously all for improving the safety of guys out there on the field but I don’t think too many guys are going to elect to go with the new headwear until the league figures out a way to make them look a little less ridiculous. It’s not a secret that guys care about how they look out there and that oversized monstrosity makes them look pretty silly.
