The NBA Finals are over and the Stanley Cup has been decided. In a normal year, sports fans would be embarking upon the most brutal three-month stretch of the year. Baseball? Sure, we like it, but we’re still kinda bored with it. And if you’re like me and root for a lousy team like the Mariners, your baseball season is usually unofficially over by now. But not this year…

And no, I’m not talking about the Mariners, who are a game over .500! Instead, I’m talking about the World Cup, which has come to save every sports fan from the darkness that typically arrives every June-September.

In a stroke of luck for American sports fans, the U.S. kicks off its World Cup run today — just one day after the NBA season ended — against Ghana. Ahhh, Ghana. Remember them?

In 2010, the U.S. was in the midst of a Hollywoodesque run, when it stumbled across Ghana in the round of 16.  In case you don’t remember, this is how it all went down.

A turnover in the midfield by Ricardo Clark of the USMNT leads to this early goal for Ghana, as Tim Howard is beat at the near post by Kevin Prince Boateng.
