Giancarlo Stanton is reportedly on the verge of signing the biggest contract in the history of North American sports. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, the Miami Marlins slugger is close to a deal that would pay him a whopping $325 million over 13 years. It also includes a no-trade clause and will allow him to opt out after a predetermined number of years.
The $325 million would break Alex Rodriguez’s record of $275 million for a single player in North American sports history. Stanton at 25-years-old finished second in this year’s MVP voting and has clubbed 154 home runs in only 634 games played over his first five seasons. While the annual $25 million is not surprising, the longevity is slightly unexpected, albeit minor, as Stanton has missed significant time with injuries over the last few seasons. It appears that the Marlins are willing to bet he will be a serious staple in their franchise’s future and convinced him that they are committed to becoming contenders in the NL East.
