Sports officials have an extremely difficult job and while we can semi-sympathize with the difficulty and pressures of the profession, that smidgen of sympathy is eliminated when they pull crap like this.
The average reasonable fan can look past a few missed calls here and there, including subjective block-charge calls or lightning quick out-of-bounds rulings. But no one can look past a blatantly bizarre call like the one we saw during Ohio State’s 77-67 win at Penn State on Wednesday night. During the game, Penn State guard D.J. Newbill was trailing on a fast break. He was shoved by Ohio State’s Amir Williams.
Call the foul on Williams or just let it go? There is no third option. The official elected for the non-existent third option and whistled Newbill for a shove. Yes, the guy who was blatantly pushed not only did not receive a call but he was given a foul.
