Caitlin Clark took the WNBA by storm this year as she instantly emerged as the most popular player in the league while earning All-Star honors and winning the Rookie of the Year award in a landslide. But it sounds like Patrick Mahomes is trying to build a team to compete against her.
According to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany Mahomes are part of a group that has met with the WNBA about possibly owning an expansion team.
“As WNBA expansion continues, ownership of the NWSL’s KC Current — which includes Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany — has met with the WNBA and is in contention to bring the league’s next franchise to Kansas City. Mahomes also co-owns the KC Royals and Sporting KC,” Schefter said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
This would obviously mean that the team owned by Mahomes would be competing against Caitlin Clark every year, challenging her throne.
Of course, Mahomes likely has Clark to thank for even having the possibility to purchase part of an expansion franchise.
This season, Clark led to unprecedented attendance and television viewership, which in turn set the league on a positive trajectory that’s only amplified by a new media rights deal worth more than $100 million.
It has never been a better time to be associated with the WNBA, and it sounds like Mahomes is looking to get aboard.
Still, given how competitive Mahomes is, he’ll obviously like to build a team that can beat Calrk, even if she has established herself as one of the most dominant players in the game.
We’ll have to see whether or not Mahomes does indeed get to own a portion of a WNBA team.
It will be even more interesting to see how that team later performs against Clark.
