WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife have a new baby girl. But don’t go calling her a new mother just yet.
In an interview with CBS Sports, Griner revealed that she wants the baby to call her “Pops.”
The CBS reporter mentioned to Griner that she was about to take on a new job, one that’s “really hard and scary” with the birth of her first child with her wife, Cherrelle.
The couple celebrated the birth of a newborn son earlier this month but haven’t publicly commented until now. Griner said she will “train” her son to call her “Pops” rather than “mom.”
Griner went on to say that when it comes to having a child, “Everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window.”
Griner also expressed some irritation that she had to leave Team USA women’s basketball training for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.
It’s been quite the turnaround for Griner, who not too long ago was imprisoned in Russia for bringing a personal amount of cannabis oil aboard a domestic flight with her Russian Premier League team.
President Joe Biden proved instrumental in her release, swapping the WNBA star for a convicted arms dealer.
Griner appears to be making good on her second chance of freedom.
