High school football: Where no play is truly dead until the whistle is blown.
During Friday night’s game between Oakland Hills and Howard, Oakland Mills quarterback Trevon Hopkins received a snap from the shotgun and rolled to his right before dumping a pass off to his receiver. Quickly swarmed by the entire Howard defense, the receiver was immediately stalled by about five Howard players. However, thanks to some quick thinking, the receiver then somehow bobbled the ball back to Hopkins, who quickly darted in the opposite direction for a touchdown.
The best thing about this is that it’s hard to tell what, if anything, was done on purpose here. Hopkins does put his hands out like he’s waiting for the ball to come back to him but the receiver doesn’t pass it back until he’s completely mauled by the opposing team. For what it’s worth, Oakland Mills seems to prefer running the ball with Hopkins, rather than throwing it. In the game against Howard, Hopkins threw the ball 14 times for 85 yards while he ran it 23 times for 135 yards.
Unfortunately, despite the brilliant play call, Oakland Mills went on to lose the game to Howard by a score of 29-22.
