It’s sad, really, to find out that you work with adults who have a literacy problem. I’d love to be able to laugh at this but sadly this is no laughing matter. Please take a look at the image below:
As you can see, the sign is not only very easy to read but also colorful. I’ve learned in my time here that using pretty pictures and bright colors in your documentation and will often help you get the results you desire, but I never took into account the fact that some people never got hooked on phonics. If you have time today, please reach out to your local adult education location and find out how you can help end this horrible development.
One side note – in 1965, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared September 8 “National Literacy Day”. It was first celebrated in 1966. UNESCO hanged signs everywhere announcing the event but, strangely, no illiterate people showed up.
