By now, soccer fans across the country — from the casuals to the diehards — have expressed their opinions regarding Jurgen Klinsmann’s decision to leave Landon Donovan off the World Cup roster. Quite frankly, I seriously doubt any U.S. soccer roster decision has ever generated this many angry Tweets and frustrated Facebook statuses.
As expected, most are upset that the all-time leading scorer in U.S. men’s soccer history isn’t headed to Brazil. I happen to share that opinion. Donovan isn’t the same player we’re used to seeing, but having him on the bench to sub into the game during crunch time, and his attacking style of play from the wing would have been vital for the U.S. as the team prepares to enter the group of death.
But, because of all the anger and disappointment that has dominated everyone’s hearts and minds, and because he won’t be playing his last World Cup contest down in Brazil, Donovan has yet to be awarded a proper send-off.
Let’s give that to him. Sure, he’s scored the most goals in USMNT history and we’ll always remember this photograph, but to say goodbye, only one goal is necessary to demonstrate the impact he’s had on the game. Try not to tear up.
