Last month, transgender golfer Hailey Davidson won the championship at the NXXT Women’s Classic in Orlando, Florida, causing quite a lot of controversy as she takes a major step toward potentially qualifying for the LPGA Tour. But after her win, she insists that she does not have an unfair advantage just because she is a transgender athlete.
During a recent interview with Sky News, Hailey Davidson claimed that she no longer has a physical advantage over other women because she has been on hormones for “almost nine years” and had gender reassignment surgery nearly three years ago.
“I recognize that I did have an unfair advantage a few years ago. I’ve been transitioning for nine years. I’ve been on hormones for almost nine years, I had surgery… coming up almost on three years. I’ve lost just over 50 miles an hour swing speed,” Davidson told Sky News.
Davidson does believe that there need to be regulations in place with regard to transgender athletes.
“Trans athletes shouldn’t be banned, but at the same time, there needs to be regulations in place because it shouldn’t just be a free-for-all all,” she said. “I think with so many topics, we as a society just need to sit down and listen to each other rather than scream at each other and put hatred on it.
“I think we forget that people are actually humans at the same time.”
Davidson dreams of earning a place in the LPGA Tour.
