Former collegiate swimmer and transgender activist Lia Thomas caused a stir on social media this week after a photo surfaced on Instagram appearing to show her wearing a sweatshirt in support of Antifa.

On Monday, Andy Ngo – a senior editor at The Post Millennial – shared a screenshot from Instagram that appeared to show Lia Thomas wearing the Antifa-related shirt that read “Antifa Super Soldier.”

“#Trans swimmer Lia Thomas, formerly William Thomas, has now embraced the #Trantifa branding in new photos posted on social media,” Ngo said in a tweet. “Trans violent militancy is the current focus of #Antifa. They believe that critics of trans ideology should be silenced, maimed or murdered. Some call for sexual violence against females in particular, as revenge.”

Antifa  – which is short for “Anti-Facist” – is a decentralized collection of autonomous left-leaning groups that have become known for their militant opposition to white supremacists and neo-Nazis and members of white nationist groups like the Proud Boys. Members of the disorganized movement tend to label themselves as socialists, communists, or anti-capitalists.

The shirt itself is almost certainly a joke that playing on a popular Internet meme that mocks conservatives for their gullibility.

The phrase “Antifa Super Soldier” originated from a satirical tweet back in 2017 that many right-leaning Twitter users incorrectly feared was a legitimate call to violence, despite the obvious sarcasm. Since then, the phrase has been used to mock conservatives.
