Former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder helped fund a movie about the early life and career of former United States President Donald Trump, but it sounds like the film did not turn out the way that either one of them had hoped, and Trump is now trying to shut the film down with a legal threat.
The film, called The Apprentice, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month and received an eight-minute standing ovation from the crowd in attendance. But Dan Snyder was reportedly “furious” at the way Donald Trump was portrayed in the film, and now Trump himself appears to be trying to shut the film down as a result of his portrayal.
According to a report from Variety, attorneys for Donald Trump have sent a cease and desist letter to the filmmakers in an effort to block its U.S. sale and release, warning the team behind the film not to pursue a distribution deal.
“This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire,” Steven Cheung, Trump campaign communications director, said in a statement, according to Variety.
The film does not yet have a distributor in the United States and Trump’s legal team appears to be trying to keep it that way.
