Last week, former United States President Donald Trump was formally indicted on 37 federal counts stemming from his alleged mishandling of classified documents. This week, the former president defended himself during a televised interview and he had a pretty surprising excuse for his failure to turn them over to the Department of Justice: golf.

This week, Donald Trump joined Fox News where he sat down for an interview with Bret Baier. During the interview, Baier asked Trump why he didn’t immediately give the Department of Justice the classified documents in his possession. Trump claimed it was because those boxes contained some of his “personal things” including his golf gear.

“I had boxes. I wanted to go through the boxes and get my personal things out. I don’t want to hand that over to NARA yet,” Trump said. “And I was very busy as you’ve sort of seen.”

“Before I send boxes over, I have to take all of my things out. These boxes were interspersed with all sorts of things – golf shirts, clothing, pants, shoes. There were many things,” Trump said.

It’s certainly a surprising excuse from the former president, and it will be interesting to see if that defense works in court.
