The Florida Panthers took a commanding lead in the Stanely Cup Playoffs Final against the Edmonton Oilers this month and appeared set to win their first Stanely Cup in franchise history. That was before Donald Trump took notice and praised them on his social media platform.
In the middle of Game 4, as the Florida Panthers were trying to close out the series against the Edmonton Oilers and pull off the sweep to win the Stanely Cup, Donald Trump made a social media post praising the team, calling the Panthers a “fantastic Ice Hockey Team” – as if he needed to specify – and made it clear that he was rooting for them.
“Wow, the Florida Panthers are a fantastic Ice Hockey Team. They’re 3-0 against the very good Edmonton Oilers from Canada. They’re down 1 to 0 tonight, but it’s still early. Hopefully they will put them away. Very impressive!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
From the moment Trump made that post, things have gone downhill for the Panthers. In that game, Edmonton scored seven more goals to ultimately win 8-1. And on Wednesday night, the Oilers outplayed the Panthers in Florida to win 5-3 and send the series back to Edmonton for a Game 6.
Needless to say, it sounds like Trump cursed the Panthers.
Only one team in NHL history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the Stanely Cup Final. So we’ll have to see how real the Trump curse actually is.
