The NFL franchise in Washington ditched its problematic old name back in 2020 and embraced the Washington Commanders as the new team name in 2022. But it doesn’t sound like fans are all that crazy about the current name.
A recent poll found that a pretty significant majority of Washington Commanders fans either dislike or hate the name and a very small portion of fans think that they should keep the current name.
“According to an April Washington Post-Schar School poll, most local sports fans (54 percent) say they either dislike or hate the name. Among just local Commanders fans, the antipathy toward the name is even more stark — 58 percent say they don’t like it,” the Washington Post reported this week.
“In fact, only 16 percent of Commanders fans think the team should keep the name, while most say they would like the team to change to a different name. Again.”
The Commanders have made it pretty clear that they have no plans to return to the derogatory old name that they eliminated in 2020, but the new ownership of the team has not ruled out the possibility of changing the name once again.
We’ll have to see whether or not another name change is in the future.
