A week after helping lead the Kansas City Chiefs to their second consecutive Super Bowl championship, Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce picked up another major honor at the People’s Choice Awards on Sunday night as he was named the Athlete of the Year.
Travis Kelce was unable to attend the ceremony in Santa Monica, California on Sunday night, but he claimed the prize after he was nominated along with fellow superstars Coco Gauff, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Sabrina Ionescu, Simone Biles and Stephen Curry.
Last month, Kelce expressed confusion as to why he was even nominated for such a prestigious award along with such legendary athletes. During an appearance on his “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason Kelce, he questioned why he was on the list, calling it “[freaking] nonsense.”
“What did I do to get Athlete of the Year? I did SNL,” Kelce said of the nomination back in January according to Us Weekly. “How am I on this [list]?”
Not only was he on the list, but he ultimately won the award.
It’s worth noting that the People’s Choice Awards are voted on by fans – hence “People’s Choice” – and Kelce has recently surged in popularity after he began dating pop sensation Taylor Swift. So while Kelce is one of the most dominant athletes in the world right now, the boost from Swifties likely made the difference here.
