For many years, marijuana was strictly forbidden by the NFL with many prominent players getting hit with lengthy suspensions due to violations of the league’s drug policy like former Miami Dolphins star running back Ricky Williams and former Cleveland Browns star receiver Josh Gordon. But it seems that times have changed.

In 2021, the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed to update the league’s drug policy to require just one test per year administered at the start of training camp, with far less strict penalties for a failed test.

It’s a big change, and during a recent interview, Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce explained how easy it is to pass a drug test under the new policy.

“If you just stop in the middle of July, you’re fine,” Kelce said during a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “A lot of guys stop a week before and they still pass because everybody’s working out in the heat and sweating their tail off. Nobody’s really getting hit for it anymore.”

Kelce went on to reveal that anywhere between 50 percent and 80 percent of the NFL regularly uses marijuana, which is certainly a chance from several years ago.

It’s safe to say that the league has changed quite a bit in recent years.
