Over a year ago, NFL legend Tom Brady agreed to purchase a share of the Las Vegas Raiders franchise to become a part owner of the team, though that sale has not yet been approved. He is also now beginning his career as a broadcaster for Fox, serving as the network’s top analyst. But both of those jobs directly conflict with each other.
As NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, Tom Brady cannot do both jobs to the best of his ability if he is serving as both a team owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and an analyst for Fox because the jobs directly conflict with each other.
“It’s an obvious conflict of interest. On one hand, Brady would have a fiduciary duty to the Raiders to tell them anything he learns about the team’s future opponents. On the other hand, Brady would have an obligation to Fox and its audience to get the best information to augment his commentary on the games. Broadcasters typically have access to plenty of inside information,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.
“If the NFL simply restricts Brady’s access for certain games (and since every team is a potential future postseason opponent of the Raiders, his access should be restricted for all games), Brady won’t be in the best position to do the job to the best of his abilities.”
This conflict of interest is one of the reasons why Brady’s sale has not yet been approved by the other league owners. We’ll have to see how this all works out.
Obviously, it’s a pretty terrible situation for Brady to be taking on two very important jobs and not being able to do either one of them to the best of his ability. We’ll have to see how it all shakes out.
