Earlier this month, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to their roster to presumably take over as their next starting quarterback after the Denver Broncos decided to release him. But it doesn’t sound like that starting job is necessarily guaranteed to him.
According to a report from Adam Schefter, the Steelers have “no commitment, obligation, [or] loyalty” to Russell Wilson. In fact, there’s even a scenario where the team could choose to cut Wilson before the season if he’s outplayed by Justin Fields, who the team also added this month.
“The fact of the matter is they have the luxury of letting this play out during camp and doing whatever is best for that football team,” Schefter said according to Steeler Nation. “There is no commitment, obligation, loyalty to anyone of these guys. They didn’t pay very much for either one of them. I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season.”
Obviously, this is a pretty brutal situation for Wilson as he will have no promises of a starting role or even that he will remain on the roster this season. We’ll have to see how this plays out.
